The VDB can also disappear because of the die being filled with debris/grease. What coins are missing the VDB? I haven't heard of them before.
Acetone will remove the contamination but it still leaves the evidence. A dip might do it but finger prints can etch the surface of the coin.
It is just circulation damage, if it were missing the clad layer it would look copper.
