When a coin is struck through a foreign object. The area only shows a recess in the coins surface. The detail is that of what ever got in the way....
Shouldn't the impurity's be on top? Wouldn't a coin dip work? I thought gold was impervious to corrosion?
It was struck with a punch. I wonder how recent it was done or if there is some documentation on the mark. Could be someone just playing around....

It is damage or plating blisters, most likely plating blisters.
