I can see what you are talking about in this image you posted but I don't feel it is the right shape/style or size of the 7 that was used in 1857....
I thought that might be what the OP was seeing on the lettering but I could not see that in the images. Good question. Longacre doubling really...
I always just use sandpaper on the proofs but it's fun to watch the plastic sticks on q-tips melt with acetone.;)
