I would guess a drill bit.

I agree with 67 but it's tough to grade proofs from images. Images don't always show hairlines.
Looks like it was plugged to me but I'm thinking it's an odd spot to put a hole to hang it. Maybe put there to sew it into a piece of clothing?

I interpret that you and Thread Crapper are mid level beginners. There is great value in using books at any level in this hobby.
The image makes it look plated. If you can, put your lights at 10 and 2 and bring them closer to the camera (higher angle to the coin).
