I can understand your point. Many PL's are from repolished dies. That doesn't bother me. But that's my choice.
All of the 1921 Peace Dollars are high relief. You can't really see the relief because it's worn away....
I'd call this an attractive VF-30, with a shot at 35. I don't think this has what it takes to make 40. I don't see any evidence of cleaning in...
This actually has quite a strong strike. It would qualify for Full Thumb, which is difficult. Die polishing marks do not affect the grade at...
Oh, I absolutely agree that Silver and Gold eagles are both incredibly rare in PL. But, as ddddd mentions, they exist. I've seen a couple of the...
I replied up there ^ ;)
Yes, I had seen that one. I was a bidder at a few hundred dollars. Obviously, I got destroyed. I'm not familiar with any other 70 Stars, but the...
Yup, good! A die cap would absolutely cause the soft, mushy, ghostlike details. My problem with the die cap theory is that it does not explain...
Yes, the link Islander posted describes what a "capped die" is, and how it's made. It describes what the "cap" is. So what is it?
I considered that it might be a plating effect, from a mid-80's zincoln. I've seen that sort of parallel pattern on those sorts of coins. I can't...
Then you tell us what the caps are made of. Not trying to be difficult. Pushing you to learn :)
I think it's personal preference. As with most things collecting, it comes down to what you like. The analogy on coins would be, do you want...
Did you read the article posted?
I don't think it's a capped die. Those usually have a more regular appearance. Given the texture of the coin, I strongly suspect this is struck...
The most obvious immediate indicator is the overall mushiness of the strike, especially on the obverse. Genuine coins will have a crisp strike.
Strike is very important to me - I'd rather have a well struck coin, and pay a premium for it, than to have a weakly struck coin missing details....
Looking at the reverse lettering towards the bottom, do you think the 90 might also be counterfeit?
I agree that the 89 CC is clearly counterfeit. I really hope that you didn't pay much for it, or are able to return it. If genuine, that would be...
Hm. Must really suck to just casually surprise win things like that. ;)
No, it isn't worth it. Your coin is a VG or F, and it has problems. It looks legit, and anyone interested in buying it would check the...
