You can send coins to NGC for grading without joining NGC. You can also use Hugh Wood insurance to cover your coins.
I would stay out of it. It would be cool if the coin goes to someone that knows what it is.

There is no need to worry about sending back a counterfeit coin. If it was an issue, it would be big news to the hobby, but it's not.

The post office, SS, collectors, dealers and the TPGs don't care. Counterfeits get mailed all the time. It's the only way to fix many situations.
