It looks like a worn die. The area in and around "of" is a known weak area on Cents. Not enough metal to fill in all the high spots on the coin.

Yes it's wear and tear but originally the coin was struck through grease on the Die. Quite a nice greaser.
It's damaged. The lighter colored areas are where the metal was pushed out to the sides and worn down over the years.
If you didn't treat them with anything then it's natural. Just a dark toning to me. I just found a few nickel rolls that I tucked away a few years...
