Looks to me like verdigris or some such material is forming. As the chemical forms, the copper of the coin is consumed.

It can be destructive of the surface, and even if not, residue left can cause unsightly toning if not thoroughly rinsed.
I sincerely find it hard to believe any household cleaner would do that.
Gotta agree with Doug here to separate cleaning and harsh cleaning. Cleaning would be rinsing/soaking with any pure solvent or dipping in coin...
