That spotty toning is not the most attractive in my opinion. What really rules out the star for me, though, is the dark/terminal toning at the top...
Thanks! It's kind of funny to see a ten year old thread pop up like this, but I'm glad that someone is still getting value out of it!
Dang, that coin is smooth. It easily earns the 67, in my opinion.
I skimmed through this thread at @Lehigh96 's request, and I have to say it turned pretty ugly. I haven't posted much lately, simply because of...
I would not give the star to that Morgan. The toning is just too dark. Unless the luster is absolutely stunning, or there are semi-prooflike...
I wonder what this means for the future of Krause? Their catalogue of world coins is an extremely valuable resource, and I'd hate to see it...
No star on the 1887. The black, terminal toning is considerably unattractive in my opinion. I know some people like the look, but it is definitely...
I've seen a couple of people say this in this thread. While contact marks can affect eye appeal if they are significant, widespread, or quite...

I agree that this is a very attractive coin, but that speckled, mottled toning is not something that attracts a star. No star for the toning....
I don't see 60's with stars often, but I like it.
You can probably devise some scenario with heat and humidity and improper storage to explain those colors. But they look weird. So, I'd call it...
The 71 proof 50 cent is questionable enough that I would hesitate to call it market acceptable. I think questionable color QC is the right call here.
I'm not a huge fan of the dark crescent on the reverse, but overall that is a superb piece. The obverse really pops. I like the star for this one.
For the second Franklin, I do think that it deserves a star - but NGC did not give it one :( Who's next?
