That's just the terminology that I was introduced to. For instance, coppercoins lists "rim cuds" as a die marker for the 1972P-1DO-004.

Adjusted lighting and presto. Scratch is pretty much gone. The lighting really exaggerated it. These are the best pictures I can do right now....
