I see no evidence of doubling. There is 0% chance of this being 001 as well because the mintmark position is not the same.
In this case I retract my original statement and agree with Rick. The letters must be equally spaced for a wide AM variety.
What is the date of the coin? I would guess late 80s...looks like a wide AM to me, but not sure.

Looks unusual...can't tell if it is raised or infuse, but either way I would probably attribute it to plating issues. (post 1982 cents are made up...
Not seeing any split serifs...I'd be inclined to say MD.
That's exactly what happened...the plating around the mintmark rotted and left an impression.
Looks like extreme die wear.
