I have treated the entire surface of copper/bronze coins with VC just to preserve them, and have notice it wipe away a lot of green that I wan't...
Google "gold and silver pennies" high school chem experiment to plate some zinc onto a penny and either polish/buff it out to make a "silver"...

May I ask what profession you are - or were in?
I give up, only been using balances of all kinds for 60+ years...
The torch was apparently replaced in 1986 during a refurbishment, and the replacement is covered in gold leaf......
