All of the "S" mint coins from 1968-1974 showed die chip problems at the mint mark for some reason. Not every coin every time, just in general.
Environment is a factor you are seeing plus zinc rot is also appearing, especially at the mint mark. Remember, the copper plating is microns thin...

For some unknown reason this occurred a lot from 1960-64 on cents. It included the chin and neck a lot.
I was never a big fan of gold for some unknown reason, never figured it out. Even my rings are all white gold or sterling, maybe it was the color....

It can happen to any coin, any year. The presses that make the coins require regular oiling and greasing and this can drop into the coin chamber...
