Whatever stained this picked up the design and it travelled creating what you see, before it dried out.
A crack could be expected eventually with a die that has as much polishing as I see. Over worn die going on here.
I'm not sure but great pics. I am sure we could do better on edge lettering though. There was better work done on edges on classic U.S. coinage.

The crossed flag coins-are they from around 1920 or so. I seem to recall having one of these.
