If that is repeated on the back, it would be an off-center strike, but not enough to make it valuable. If it is only on the front, it is a MAD...

If you treat it with VerdiCare and it comes off it was verdigris, if it stays on, it was patina, but you are now protected in any case...right...
Proof coins are made from blanks that are cleaned and polished, they are then struck on special presses that are higher pressure and are struck...

I agree, that was my first thought.
Hadn't considered paint, could be. First give it a hot water soak overnight or for a day or so and then (after dry) give it an acetone soak/bath.
What kind of metal detector did you use...:)
