    Feel free to be sorry. It's in a straight holder and looks like fingerprint oils caused this, based on the pics. Completely natural, IMO!

    But I agree. Not AU. Detail could be a VF25, in fact. Remember, key date 1923-S coins are graded VF20-30 with only 1.5 digits of the date visible!...
