Notation of a famous previous owner (or collection). Kinda like owning a guitar played by Elvis.
There would be at least four types in the years 1836-1839 alone ! ;) Fascinating stuff, these large cents.
Makes sense. I 'm really interested in that transitional range of years (1836-1839) while the engravers were evolving a new Liberty - ultimately...
A lot of things didn't get throught the Civil War too well...
So are you calling it a Matron Head, a Braided Hair... or both ? :D Which hole(s) does it fill ? ;)
Mardi... this is one of the things one hears consistently around here. It's all about the coin, and one's personal skill at determining its...
Yep. IOW, melt value. These babies, if genuine, have ~ 0.97oz gold. So 97% of the spot price is the intrinsic value.

Attribution-wise, the best I could come up with is N-10 (r.1). I'm not certain, as the 23rd leaf (under "C" in AMERICA) almost touches the "C" on...
To me, the top image looks like evidence of a worn die. Those appear to be die flow lines. IMO that points to a genuine coin, but doesn't prove...
The first thing I thought about when I saw this coin is the surface. Clearly, these are not original surfaces. At best, the coin has been cleaned...
Early American coppers and John Reich silver - especially half-dimes.
Awwwwwww MAN ! What ever happened to .900 fine gold ??? Feuchtwanger900 will be very disappointed. ;)
From one avid type coin man to another... That's one heck of a coin ya got there ! Definitely not the "same ol' same ol". Off the beaten path....
Numismatic present ? No, not yet. But some darn good shopping ! I went to Heritage in Dallas and gave a thorough look-see of the auction lots for...
