My guess is that some old timer, used to put flux on the penny and then stick his dirty soldering gun on top to clean, thus all the punctures....
Airtight display case so you can see your coins. Descant are those little bags you see in a lot of electronics packages, they absorb moisture...
Jezzzz those old cases were hard on those babies. They do not look proof to me, perhaps just nice mint sets of the day. Just my amateur opine....
