I don't think it's counterfeit. I think it wore down as a jewelry piece and then it was tooled poorly.
I'll trade you a bunch of "S" mint Morgans for equal grade "O" minted ones. Using the Oldman (all coins equal) grading system, of course. :D

Fake would be my guess. Note the denticles on the obverse from 3-5 o'clock. Some are merely dots, seperated from the rim.
