The first few years, the "S" was above the ribbon and it varied in shape. It did not look like this from 1856-1860.
Let me explain the difference. See that 1863 IHC I posted on this page? The variety is nothing special. There are no misplaced dates, repunched...
I know the attribution, as I was watching that one! I will not be giving it away, however - let’s give the others a chance. Congrats on winning...
Not every VAM collector goes after micro VAMs, and I certainly don’t. I find late date large cents easier to attribute, and that’s saying a lot....
[ATTACH] [ATTACH] This coin will probably get its own thread. Most of the 1080000 mintage was destroyed during WWII. Not bad for a 25¢ junk bin...
[ATTACH] [ATTACH] You’ve probably seen this one before. 11 die cracks! 1863 Shattered Reverse Poliquin-27c $8
[IMG] Looks pretty similar to me.
Well, looks like it's not ancient or medieval at all. It's a Tu Duc Thong Bao cast in Vietnam in brass in the 19th century.
[ATTACH] [ATTACH] This is a coin I bought at one point for 20 cents out of the world coin junk bin. The inscription intrigues me - I can’t seem...
I agree that modern collecting is too centric on the number on a label. I am jealous of those who collected before grading services - they know...

There was an old cleaning at some point, but the halo effect on this coin is not very strong, so I think the coin is market acceptable. I see a...
[ATTACH] [ATTACH] This comes close enough to yours. It’s an 1868 Snow-13 Hub Through in solid AG (the reverse scratches are exaggerated by the...

Very nice coin, almost makes F-12 IMO. There are no major surface issues and the eye appeal is great for a circulated coin, especially for an EAC.
Let me try this: The lettered edge is S-75 R-3. The plain edge is S-76b R-1. Awesome coins, and thank you for sharing. Was I right?
Bustchaser stated that many variety collectors do not collect by die state, which is correct. The ones that do don't go absolutely wild over them...
I don’t think any full red coins EXIST for some of those earlier types, particularly the Liberty Caps and Flowing Hairs...
