.50 cents 69-Ds are super common out here where we get 95%+ D coins. The 65's I find almost every day.
$1 There may be a "slight" premium for the old style large dollar coins, but in that condition it's not worth chasing after an extra nickel or a dime.
Could also be environmental. Copper is reactive and will turn colors (red or darker) when exposed to soil, air, water, gases, pollutants, etc....
