You should also warn them from bidding in ANY auction where you (or a trusted set of eyes) have not viewed the coin in-hand prior to bidding --...

I think that coin is a good candidate for conservation, surface wise. I'm not familiar enough with its value to give you direction on ROI.
p.s. if you're "leaning towards" returning it, you probably should.

Someone was likely trying to pass that off as a mule -- and still could. I would destroy it, personally.
the photos do appear to show doubling. not sure of the type (dd/machine)
over-sharpening a photo will sometimes show as doubling. other times the angles of the light do the same thing and a film camera would pick up...
Both coins would not grade problem-free at NGC/PCGS -- and rightfully so, IMO. That said, they are both cool coins!

Please try and keep lighting and color and exposure constant when doing "before" and "after" experiments like this. It helps those of us at home...
