You're referring to the abrasion on the trident shaft? If so, to me, it appears to be PMD.

But you were were observant in noticing that picture shows the S mint mark. I had looked at it, and hadn't noticed that. Good eye!
Of course you know that the obverse "W" is Adolph A. Weinman's initials, but the "S" picture is from the upcoming San Francisco proof of August...
