So on old coins like this how can you tell the difference between a scratch and an adjustment mark?
Think acetone would get that brown mark off the reverse?
I'm not in front of my book but I just posted a 1838 that has a die crack on *9 that's N-4 R1, should be very recent in the US coins forum....
Even with the scratch it was graded a 65?

Don't know if eBay still does this or not but if your item had more than 50 bids it'd show up with a flame next to it and say hot. Might help more...
