As I understand it, it is when the die has been so used that it fails from fatigue without cracking.... cracking would make a die break... See...

@halfcent1793 (I have a half cent from 1793 BTW) I think it is a Nova coin based on the shape of the rays.
I think the date is on the edge of the coin, though, if missing... was it milled off?
Good Morning All Interesting coin. Die crack on Obc at 8 oclock, and the Reverse shows the impression of a Nova Constellatio coin.... I can see...

One note to add.... in the scan you can see the stem in the R more clearly than in the hand... it looks more like AUCTOPI in hand.. maybe that is...
One of the things to do with CT coppers is attribute them using the Miller book. Well... I have the Miller book but this coin is escaping me.......
