I don't know anything about these so called "double dies", but I have heard of doubled dies... (pet peeve. :P)
Too many tricks of the light to figure out what's going on IMO.
Seriously, Tim? Hijacking the OP to call us all rookies and re-evaluate your coin, which you are now posting in a thread that you didn't start? If...
Not a doubled die, but a double struck cent! Very cool find!
Master die doubling.
Looks like a hit or MD. The first photo shows it the best. The coin does not have the appearance of a doubled die.
Can you be more specific as to what "error" you see?
I don't think the mintmark is an RPN. Looks like some contact marks or maybe MD that are giving it a doubled appearance.
I personally don't search nickel rolls, but I would say finding a shield nickel in a roll is quite rare. Do you have photos?
It looks like some art piece done by some guy in SF that runs a blog called "blackstock". (you can google it) I don't see what the big fuss with...
After the new picture as uploaded I agree that it appears to be a Wide AM and not a Close AM.
Because shelf-like doubling is indicative of MD, not a DD. You can clearly see the shelf and how the doubling "cuts into" the design. A doubled...
Picture is a bit blurry...we will need some good, in-focus shots to confirm.
It isn't an "official" name for an error so there is probably little documentation on it. People sometimes call die breaks in this area "hornet's...
A better grade liberty cap, or some other AU-MS Large Cent.
Your mintmark is close, but not exact IMO. If you compare your picture to 1DO-001, your mintmark looks a little farther west than the one on the...
Jay, the coin you linked to is a class VI and is identified due to extra thickness, not because of any splits. From the pictures provided, I don't...
That's fine, but can you provide an image link of a coin that resembles what you are describing? Just so I can understand.
I think the coin has just been damaged significantly that it resembles a split in the date, so I don't think it's a doubled die. Can't really...
I am not seeing any splits so my opinion is MD. Could you post a pic of the date and mintmark in one photo?
Separate names with a comma.
