You do loose a little... Dirt, steel springs in clasps, small stones. In a 500 pennyweight lot I usually have a .5%-1% melt loss.
I think I got mine for $15. That was a hefty sum for a 7 year old. This was more then 20 years ago tho.

Yeah that was for 90%. I'm not sure their buy for 40% but I'm sure it's less than spot. Next time I call them ill ask their buy for 40%.
Just an FYI I sold a $1,000 FV bag of 90% to APMEX today for Spot +$.30. Spot or less is a good deal.

It's struck on lead. They use lead because its soft and won't damage the unfinished die.
The lady on the phone told me that they probably wouldn't do this one but she is checking for me and will get back with me tomorrow.
I also put a call in to NGC today about getting it certified. They are supposed to call me tomorrow.

The 1796 appears to be a relatively new Chinese counterfeit... I'm highly skeptical that this piece has been in a collection since the 50's.
