The seller that is selling this coin on Ebay is a really good seller , I have bought some awesome coins from the seller and was treated good....

from your description you probably have a coin that has been in a fire. heat will change them to about any dark color and cause the nickle plating...
when the recessed area of the coin dies become filled in with dirt,metal dust, grease and all kinds of other debris mixed together we just call it...

strike doubling or machine doubling does not add any extra value at all to a coin unless it is a extreme example where the letters and numbers are...
I think you have got it right. coins will tone to about any color , it all depends on what they have been exposed to.
