1916 is a pattern. 1917 has Type I and Type II, 1925-30 has the date recessed into the pediment, or Type III
what do you think the toning is made from? If it doesn't react with the metal, the toning wouldn't be affected.

I have all 4 myself as they fit perfectly in my run of US Mint Sets from 1959-date. Tough sets, but worth having!
