Sorry, but that coin definitely appears to be a misattributed 1917. You can see a discussion and get some diagnostics about it here :...
If you couldn't tell that coin was cleaned, I would strongly suggest that you not buy uncertfied coins of value. It is far too perilous.
Chances are not merely "very remote" - they are nil. It is a very poor fake, which looks nothing like a genuine example.
It's possible that it's due to the scans. But the entire obverse and reverse look unnatural/lifeless, So I would guess that the cleaning is over...
There looks to be light wear on the Indian's cheek, as well as in the hair and on the eagle. I would guess that it's a mid-range AU.
If you don't want the police to handle it and don't care if you have to buy it back or not, then just approach the shop owner with the truth. And...

Very nice looking example Lee - it appears to be one of the ones with a flashy, semi-PL obverse.
He probably just didn't know. Shortly after NGC posted images of the coins in their holders with the grading labels, the images were removed from...
OK, graded and encapsulated, but not sonically sealed. ;)
The coins have already been graded and encapsulated by NGC. And I predict that there will be a settlement, as opposed to a trial.
I seriously doubt that the judge will be basing his ruling on that particular issue. Rather, it will likely be based on which party has the burden...
I was aware of that. But it's circumstances really have nothing to do with the 1933 Saints.
I enjoyed that book, but was absolutely enthralled with this one on the same topic of the 1933 Saints: [IMG] Double Eagle: The Epic Story of...
The 1913 liberty Nickels were very different from the 1933 Saints. And the export license for the 1933 Farouk Saint was an error (by somone who...
This was a listed exception to the recall: "(b) Gold coin and gold certificates in an amount not exceeding in the aggregate $100.00 belonging to...
