It does somewhat resemble one of those old Mexican reales as someone mentioned earlier. But history is filled with too many acronym's that are "SSS".
Looks AU53-55 to me. Was it a BIN or auction? Over payed IMO

Oh, none taken. There's lots of variables when collecting coins, and you really have to be sure of most to be a good, consistent collector.
Sorry, but that isn't true. I buy mostly raw coins. I've bought a couple raw rare coins (in hand). I don't advocate buying super-rare, raw coins...
I wouldn't touch a raw coin that "rarely appears in auction houses" with a 9 foot pole. Hope everything works out for you.
