Probably an old counterfeit. Back then people would make underweight counterfeits because back then a cent was litteraly a cents worth of copper...
I think that they are both fairly similar on most coins with few exceptions. Though idk why you'd have newer proof coins slabbed IMHO :p
Id say its an au coin. I dont think you did bad at all. Keep learning and your purchases will get smarter. Everyone has overpaid for coins a time...

i believe most toners go for about 25-35% over the book price if that helps. more extreme toners realize a much stronger premium however
