The area that has been removed from the die is the actual design. In other words the design is nothing more than a void/hole in a die.

Technically a die physically carries none of the design. Just to complicate things a little more.
But I have to get the last word - there will also be some genuine coin varieties that get designated as counterfeit due to the fact it is unknown...
