it looks like the reverse of the 2nd coin has something imbedded it it's surface. Post Mint Damage would be guess.
Just a guess but looks like tungsten rods were laid into a mold and then gold was poured into the mold.
I've viewed some of the designs from a website that were being considered for the final coin design and I feel the mint made some poor decisions....
