Looks like this coin might have been harshly cleaned (see parallel scrub marks on surface) but still got a straight grade (AU53 and not Details)...

That is correct. I think many people think 1939-D is the lowest mintage cause it is the scarcest one in higher grades.
What is meant by "varierty 1" and "variety 2" on those wheat cents?
