Reaching here but maybe the obverse die was damaged with this strike? If a blank was covering the edge of the reverse and it was stamped it could...
The elipse lines up with the word trust on the obverse - you can see in the scan that the rim is intact...I'll work on it & Thanks again.

Thanks - that's possible. Here's a better angle. It looks like the defect is higher & the letters dont look smashed, just very faint.
