this article from Numismatic News says 1965 coins were minted from Dec 29, 1965 thru July 31, 1966...
most likely the penny was heated up

Dusty - I've found about 30 1998 and 2000 wide am's and only 2 1999's ... 1 was good enough to sell on ebay and the other had a lot of corrosion....

looks like corrosion and possible find with a metal detector. The "A" in America has some corrosion pitting probably from ground exposure. Liberty...

Coins left in the ground turn a dark brown over time, plus depending on the type of soil its in....... so basically your dark nickel to most...
