Sounds like a die chip in the mint mark but hard to tell without pictures. If it is a die chip it does not have additional value over 1 cent.
I doubt you are going to find fakes in uncleaned lots. You will mostly find very worn coins or culls. It’s still fun to do and very rewarding...
