this is what is called a interior die chip.
this coin was struck with grease , metal shavings , dust and all kinds of debris mixed together and built up on the dies. this is a common thing...

It looks like the coin is from clashed dies which I believe is fairely common on the half dimes
It's not a extra I , this is either a die gouge or a blister under the copper plating.
this is definately just a normal 1993 close AM cent. it's not even close to being a wide AM .

yes struck thru grease is what error folks calls this . the two letters of the word states was filled in on the die that struck this coin.
the letters and date are wider because of heavy use , they got flattened down making them spread out wider

I was referring to all the letters on the dollar coin not just the S .
jay if someone did this with a dremmel tool and ground off this much metal the thin copper plating would have been gone. nice find
Chris almost every error coin expert I have talked to about this believe the extra letters got on the coins edges during the edge lettering...
dt when it comes to whether a extra letter is backwards or not on the new dollars I think this would be determined by which way the donor coin was...
