Agreed, but not by a huge margin.
I did not say what the coin is. The OP stated it was a 1795 with a reeded edge. There is only one die marriage dated 1795 with a reeded edge and...
Well, if you have a genuine 1795 reeded edge large cent then you have something pretty special. The last reference I have for rarity on this S-79...
I was going to opine AU-53 but the reveal beat me to it. My hindsight is always 20/20! But I wanted to say that I really love this coin.
OP's coin is a solid VG-10 by EAC standards which are stricter on sharpness grade than the TPGs. I believe NGC should have graded the coin F-12....
VF-20.
The generally accepted term for these are "adjustment marks". In the early days of the US Mint, quality control often lacked a certain expertise...
Here's one that anyone would say is terminally toned. But underneath all that dark toning is a tremendous glossy steel reflection that my photos...
Thanks for posting this. Even though I lived in Canada for two years (1960-62), I never noticed until now that the inside of the rim is a polygon...
@Cannonball, cool finds. It doesn't matter if they are genuine or contemporary counterfeits - both are collectible although as @lordmarcovan...
I've found the discussion my post initiated to be both illuminating and entertaining. But so far, other than @Paddy54's estimate of 62/63, no one...
I appreciate everyone contributing to the discussion. Your comments have helped me to decide on the path forward, which is to replace this coin...
No need to apologize for doing what I asked, which is to give your opinion. After all, I had my doubts about the coin to begin with.
A distinct possibility-although I have a lot of difficulty discerning that myself. I've looked at a lot of coins in slabs that have been whizzed...
I could use some help with grading my 1855 3-Cent Silver. I picked up this raw example a few years ago at a local coin show for my type set. I...
I'll be an outlier and call it 60. The obverse is weakly struck, not worn with a rim ding at K12. The lack of a rim is not wear since the amount...
Well, they are out there. I just ran across this at last summer's FUN show. Saw it and snapped it up even though I wasn't specifically looking...
I think I've told this story here before so at the risk of redundancy, here goes again. Early in my coin collecting I was attending the FUN show...
Found the OP's posted coin. I won't spoil his reveal. Here's my 1795. Not as nice @johnmilton's but then very few of us have any coins as nice...
This is the late die state version of the LM-10 with the obverse cud. One of the "common" die marriages at R-3. According to Logan-McCloskey...
