These can be confusing to see. At first I thought I was seeing the same thing you first saw, then I had to turn my brain upside down. :)
Nice coin! It does look like it may have been plated, but someone else may be better at confirming that.
That's now 7 times that better pictures have been requested. I'm getting skeptical of the whole story about this coin now.

jmclements - you asked for opinions on worth, but to be honest I don't think anyone can tell based on that small, dark picture in your first post....
If you can post good pictures of the obverse and reverse - that may help to tell if it's plated or not.
