Looks like a contemporary counterfeit to me, nice find :) Personally I find stuff like this more interesting than the genuine version.
Switched to copper-nickel starting in 1947
Looks like a cast replica, maybe 30-40 years old or so. These novelty versions of various US colonial coins/tokens are very common.
Sound possibility. These don't even go as high as the quoted Goldberg prices on Heritage.
I don't see why people do this. I saw these two coins sold earlier tonight, please note the prices they sold for at a Goldberg auction last year...
Looks like a re-cut/re-punched digit, not a doubled die.
Most weakly struck coins I've seen do have luster on the weak area, it's just dull and doesn't have much, if any, cartwheel effect like the rest...
The photo makes it hard to gauge the surfaces and any luster. These coins generally are not known for strong cartwheel luster, I would expect it...
Very appealing and well executed medal, and great write-up as always. Congrats on the new pickup :)
Kolyan, preaching to the choir here :) A link to the other thread where this coin was matched to a cheap modern fake would have been helpful.
There's no varieties. At this late date the dies all came from a master hub. Earlier on, the last digits of the date were added to the die...
Not sure about the first coin, but the second coin is struck. The iron coins struck during WWI and WWII in Norway are notorious for quality...
Nice Sardinian crown :) With so many fakes of this type on the market now, it's really cool to see a nice original example that had actually...
No idea on that :)But "dog" would be pretty disrespectful. I'm assuming it has a double meaning.
They are often holed because those coins get used to make belly dancer and other traditional ornamental garments in those regions. There are also...
I've seen a somewhat similar effect on coins that had been recovered from being in sewers. Kind of looked like the ground in a dry environment...
I've yet to see a coin, medal, token etc where toning made it seem prooflike. If anything toning might make a proof or prooflike seem less so.
Ever try haloperidol with your coffee? ;)
Jeton, bad strike, good grade, nice toning and I don't think it has been chemically toned as in someone treating it with chems to get a quick...
That is a really nice example. Die polish lines that are not consistent or parallel are something I would expect on this coin.
Separate names with a comma.
