I'm gunna get the next spouse coin from the mint, Buchanan's Liberty, coming out Sept. 2nd but there might not be a lot of people getting them with me! Check out usmint.gov
I would check out your local brick and mortar shops, or if you have a coin show in your area try that first. As for what coin, the premiums on the mexican gold coins are usually closer to spot at least in my area of the country, for 1500 you should be able to find a 50 peso centenario, which has about one and a quarter ounces of gold, if you are concerned about the price of gold falling then I would pass on the Mexican coin and try to pick up a common slabbed coin, you might want to check out the classified section on coin talk where some members are selling some of their gold eagles.
How about the 2010 AGB? Here is the Apmex link: http://www.apmex.com/Product/58359/2010_W_1_oz_PROOF_Gold_Buffalo___w__Box__COA.aspx Here is the US Mint link: http://catalog.usmint.gov/webapp/wc...10001&storeId=10001&productId=15944&langId=-1 Apmex has a coupon this weekend that may push you under the US Mint price depending on method of payment. I voted for the AGE, but I also think the pre-1933 $5, $10 and $20 gold eagle coins are good investments. The $5 Indian head is about 1/4 ounce of gold and will cost you about $400 for a common date in decent condition. While this puts the price of the gold at $1600 an ounce, if you are worried about a price drop in gold, these Indian head gold coins also have a numismatic value. If gold were to drop, I don't think the Pre-1933 gold coins will be affected as much as the price of a AGE which is tied directly to the spot price of gold. If you are uncertain about numismatics, I'd stick with the AGE. Otherwise, if you feel comfortable grading the gold, pre-1933 gold coins are a decent investment.
i just bought 5 corona's from apmex .98 oz for $1233 http://www.apmex.com/Product/157/Au...rona_Gold_Coin____Brilliant_Uncirculated.aspx
then bang for buck... and depending on your sell stratergy. I'm not a fan of Krugs, so... 1) Phils 2) CMLs 3) AGEs my personal pref. 1) Buffs 2) Phils 3) CMLs 4) AGEs
I say buy some classic gold. For that amount you can still get a pre 1933 double eagle, either liberty head or st gaudens. Both are beautiful coins that sell for close to bullion depending on the date/grade. Yet in my mind, they have some numismatic value beyond the modern bullion coins.
I would buy Pre-1933 US gold coins. At the moment, I love $5 Liberty Head and Indians. Bullion is bullion and the numismatic value of pre-1933 should help shield your investment should the bottom drop out of gold.
If it is primarily for investment, I would say buy a one ounce AGE, and APMEX is okay. If you stray into pre-1933 coins, make sure they are certified by PCGS or NGC. Remember, your first gold buy is the most risky, so keep it simple.
