I purchased a Loyal Order of Moose Lighter today. When I took the insert out it had a pat. No of 43912. I checked this on the patent dater and it says its an 1864 patent. I know this can not be right. I was just wondering if anyone had any thoughts. Thanks in advance.

I would be pretty sure you are missing several digits from that number. That is a Zippo style lighter. They patented it in 1932. So you are probably looking at something around 1960 or later before your lighter was made.

    Hi,
I re-opened this because the internet needs to be a good place for info like this..
I've seen one of these, it's legit! It looks to be a DESIGN patent from 1914. This is about the time first examples of modern style flint lighters started appearing. The zippo was a resigned german lighter and appeared years later.. and they never claimed to be the first. In 1910's and 20's lighters were cutting edge technology with TONS of makers in the game. (This is why zippo's little trademark battle downright laughable!!!)

P.S. If you think that the numbers are missing then add one digit and do the math..you come up with either 1984 or 2002!!!!! Do you really think someone is throwing away thousands to patent THIS product at THAT time in history!!??
    Cheers
