As many of you know, I have been collecting krugerrands to celebrate major life events
though I have looked everywhere they have become elusive, so until those dates come up I have decided to seek out other coinage, in particular my anniversary got married
way back in 1987 and found the perfect coin, almost their 1987-W Type 1 proof a beautiful coin, the only drawback is a small chip on the back of the holder, this kind
of bothers me, the seller was clear and I am glad I took a second look before purchase
so my question would be how likely would the PR70 grade remain ? I know standards
go up and down, but dont want to buy something that is not what I am looking for as
I would need to be able to beholder it, not a super huge deal but still in bothers me...

Also found this one, for the life of me, who would want to buy this coin, major holder damage, but it gets me scratching my head, the label id down right ugly !

As long as the coin isn't affected then who cares! I would be looking for a discount, however, because of the damage to the HOLDER. Maybe not half off but something to make it worth my while. ;)
FYI: The first coin is beautiful and the chip is not a problem in my book anyways.

Small holder chips like that don't bother me. I don't see why one would expect a discount because of it. The coin isn't damaged and obviously the coin is the same one that was graded. Now if the holder was severely damaged then I would send it in to get reholdered.

Yeah, I am trying to get over that chip
being everything else is perfect, but I
would only ask the question on both
of these coins why not just get the
Re encapsulated ? if I decide to buy
I will do that at the big show coming
    up in Long Beach.

You're taking all the risk IF for some reason the coin doesn't grade the same.
The chip if it didn't compromise the holder wouldn't bother me but you can always make a lower offer at no cost to you discounting what it would cost to reHolder.

Reholder and regrade are completely different things.

Its a small chip on the stacking part of the slab that has no meaning if you store them in boxes anyways. Buy the coin or dont, its really not an issue worth a discount especially one so minor

That’s the point, but wouldn’t this be
just changing out the holder ? since
they did the initial grading ? I would
think that would be a no brainer…

That's what I would think as well.
It's not like it's melted or fell down 15 flights of stairs.
It should cross without an issue, but there's always a But... degradation over time? But not Like an old rattler holder sorta way.
Pay your dime, take you're chances...buy the Coin not the holder they say.

You can get it reholdered by PCGS. It doesn't affect the grade.

Reholder does not affect the grade besides super rare cases (which have happened where PCGS noticed something was wrong). Most times though, it will come back with the same exact grade.

The issue is that a reholder plus shipping back and forth to PCGS costs a decent chunk of money (not to mention the long wait times currently). For something this minor, there is little point to do it. That small chip can easily happen again if someone accidentally drops it. I've had slabs with similar damage and it isn't an issue. A large part of having the slab is to protect the coin and that job is still being done. I would also not expect much (if any) discount for the pictured slabs.

If I do decide to get the coin I will just have it reholdered at the Long Beach show
in a couple months, its been my understanding that I will have the coin back before the show is over :)

Interesting, yes looks like that's a service PCGS offers. Screenshot_20221127-071226.png

Grading companies are in the business to grade and make money, but I feel they also grade a lot for dealers. To me it seems to be a scam to profit off of collectors. Just my opinion. Alot of people pay more for a label then what the coin is actually worth or there are so many of the ungraded ones out there it doesn't matter if you have a graded one when you can get the same coin in a proof set ungraded for half the cost. this was knowledge learned here..
