Getting ready to unload some silver bars. I looked at them today and they are kinda yellow'ish tint...is this suppose to happen? If so that's pretty ugly!!!
Toning is typically an issue with silver unless you store it in an Air-Tite, etc. I store all my ASEs in Intercept Shield holders for that reason, and they are all still bright and shiny. If you do not like them now, they are not going to get any better so I would sell if you are not happy. Silver is silver whether it is ugly from toning or not. TC
Thanks for the info. So even my ASE's are going to look bad in those little white tubes with the green lid and cotton right? I definitely don't have anything air tight... I'll have to look up that Intercept Shield holders you speak of. As long as the price doesn't change due to the tarnish I'd feel a little better. I think I want to offload them though, no wonder people get gold eh? It doesn't tarnish like this...or does it?
I have never held silver bars except for a couple my father-in-law bought when silver was going up in the 80s and passed along to my son, so my question is: Shellac and wax is bad for collector coins because its presence produces an altered surface and reduced value, but for an art bar or bullion, I have assumed that such wouldn't affect it's value, but would certainly produce long lasting protection from toning, which coin collectors love, but many bullion collectors hate. Is this type of coating frowned upon by the bullion group? I was thinning down shellac for a furniture touchup, and I am always surprised by the thin layer that can be used. Likelike, I am sure a good wax layer could do the same thing. Jim
Although I can't answer your question, I'm looking at my bars again and they are gross! And I bought these bars about 6 months ago so it didn't take that long. They were SO clean, sparkly and shiny when they came in. It's almost like when the warranty runs out and then your TV breaks!
