Hey everyone, I just thought I'd share a recent gift I received from a great friend of mine, the 1694 Elephant Token. They're quite hard to find, especially with the amount of detail this one shows. A magnificent piece in my opinion, and I will always hold onto it. You can read about them here: http://www.coins.nd.edu/ColCoin/ColCoinIntros/ElephantTokens.intro.html
Terrific addition to your collection Ryan. Very nice indeed, and it sounds like you have a great friend too :thumb: In Durst's book, he associates the Elephant Token to the Carolinas and also New England.
very nice Hephalump and thanks for the link which lead me into early US mint.LOL , Im quite ignorant of early coins/mintage so its educational for me I wonder if the elephant was considered a luck symbol in Europe at the time or just an exotic device for a token.
Very nice Ryan, that is a scarce and desirable coin. Your example has a nice level of detail. Congratulations.
Thanks guys! And yes he's a great friend and many of you knew him. I've only come across a couple of these over the years, and never would of thought the day would come where I'd actually own one. Definitely one of my favorite pieces
Keep coming back to this Elephant Token - If I recall, this is only the second example which has been posted in CT (at least in my time). Handsome Toad had one as well, in lower grade, but a scarce variety. It circulated only to a limited extent in the US colonies, but it has undeniable appeal. It remains in my list of "must have". Some friend you have there, Ryan!
