I see what you mean. A 66 would be a stretch, but it is possible (if only I could see it in person). I was thinking the tiny marks were on the cover/ holder of the coin. I do think it is at least 65. It has decent strike, luster, and its prime focal areas are clean.

Having it in hand, I think you are right. Particularly there is one above the Eagle's left wing that is more obvious in hand than in the picture. The black spots are also a little more pronounced on the reverse in hand, although I'm not sure if they are factored into the grade. I'm doubtful that my seemingly knowledgeable dealer would have sold this to me raw for MS-63ish money if it had a shot at the high 60s.

That's a beauty, illini! Any regrets?

I bought it just because it looked cool and in hand it was da bomb!

But it was one of those situations where the coin belonged in the other guy's set (who was building a heavily toned short set and this was one of the few he had left to find) and I'm actually happy to have helped put it there.

    Great coins folks.

    Thanks for sharing.

I have several dozen VGs & Fine Walkers. This thread made me go dig out the best of my litter. Do either of these qualify as MS?

Well you ask and you shall receive. :)

Here are two that hold sentimental value.
I've posted the story behind the both of them in different threads in the past.

    Yo.

    T$ :hail:

Bummer about ya being stuck in a dungeon but good to know you have family history in your stash.

A lot of my stuff has passed to me because the family member got slabbed long before their coins did.

I really like my well used Civil War IHC's and when I get them out now and compare them to some of the pristine examples I see scattered about the web these days must laugh.

But I prefer mine to the Pretty Ones because I know their history.

I do kind of miss a certain 1937 Wheat Cent.

My younger brother got it when he claimed the 1929 2 HP Johnson outboard motor it had become a part of as a freeze plug to help folks escape a terrible flood that year.

Hopefully some day I can at least get a photo of it.
