As many of you know one of the things that got me started in collecting was my father's collection, that was passed down to him, as a partial collection from my grandpa, in 1991. My grandpa had around $250,000 in coins. Now this short set was just that, a short set, a short set, nowhere near the value of of my grandpa's collection, not even close, but it did contain some nice coins. My mom, searching for something of mine, was looking in a briefcase, this briefcase has a lot of my baby stuff in it, along with things that my parents saved for me, that were significant. My mom came downstairs with a coin and asked if I'd seen it before. I said no and inspected it, it was a 1917 WLH, no mintmark from what I can see, pretty worn, maybe a G6. It has a white color though, not a grey worn, that I normally see on worn walkers. It also has some black dots on lady liberty. It is housed in a 2x2, with my grandpa's writing on it. "1917" "WWI" "Silver" "Scarce" and the value of "$5.50" I would post pics, but still laying in bed, can't really get my setup ready. Well that's my story. Maybe there are other hidden coins, lying around?
It wasn't uncommon for many collectors from your grandfather's era to clean coins. If it is that worn, it should probably have the gray patina as you suggest. Nice keepsake though! Chris
I've noticed that quite a few of my grandpa's coins have been cleaned, but most are nice and uncleaned from what I can tell. From a distance, one would think AU, due to the color, but up close and personal you can clearly see the wear of a coin graded good.
Apparently it wasn't as white as I thought it was, although you can't blame me, the room I was in downstairs, is basically like a cave. Anyway, I still believe the coin to be dipped, the coin is slightly whiter than what is in the picture, and has breaks in the luster. Me thinks my grandpa really liked to dip those coins of his. :goofer:
If so, it was a rather light polishing, then dipping. This coin is very odd in hand. One second in the cave, it is pulling a white look, then it starts to look like what it is in the picture, although I still don't like the picture. Maybe when I get that new camera in a few months I'll be able to really capture the coin's appearance :/ But this'll do for now.
I'm glad to hear that you were able to find another piece to your family heirloom collection! And that is one very worn Walker, but still a fine... or a G6 coin!
Now all of this would be really fun if my grandpa hid coins in certain items that we own, and it is all like one big scavenger hunt! BUT, I'm going to be on the lookout from now on lol
Well only problem with that, is that we don't have any of his books, My step-grandma sold everything within a few weeks after he died, and passed down the rest to her kids, he didn't even know the guy. Quite sad actually :/
Well, that's the reality of these situations. Those stories we hear about Granny are often just that, stories. While that thread is fun to play with, often the real treasures we are left with from our relatives are much less flashy, reside in our memories and the inconsequential material items we place special sentimental meanings within. I think you are blessed to have what you have and that these things inform your own coin collecting. I am happy to see these coins you share with us your special stories that you have to go with them. :smile
