Which banking service did you use? If it was BoA, they have their own regional storage facilities, recyle and rewrap all of the change through them and only order from the Fed as needed. If you have a small local bank or a credit union in your town, try ordering through them since most small firms order direct from the Fed. Bear in mind that each FRB services a much wider area, and thus receives change from a much larger region. Chris
What part of the states are you in? I wanna make sure I don't go to your bank J/K - I haven't had any luck with halves lately either but pulled a war nickle outta my last $100 box and it made me feel better Yar maties! There still be silver to be found!
Ouch! I've never had great luck with large half dollar searches, but almost always end up with two or three 40% coins in that large a grouping.
Sorry you had no luck with that batch. Probably used someone's "dump bank," but I am hopeful that your next round of searching will be better. TC
I used a BOA branch. I live in one of the 12 Federal Reserve Cities (not New York). They came loose in a cloth bag with a sealed tie I had to cut off with kitchen shears. I had to order them and wait three business days. I did get a few (about 10) 2002-2007 which I thought were only released in sets. I looked up the mintage figures and saw how low for these years they were so I kept them. I have another order for Thursday but after that I'm not doing it anymore. I was having better luck asking for halves from banks directly. I had been just driving around buying them up from banks even ones I didn't have an account at for cash. I thought "I've found 11 by looking through $200 I can find alot looking through $1500!. I feel like such a fool. I took me about five hours to search and roll them. Now I have to see if I can pawn them off at my credit union tomorrow so I can have the cash to buy the next batch I ordered. To top it off I think I hurt my shoulder trying to lug them all inside in one trip. I used to find them pretty easily but that was 15 years ago. Simpler times.
Can I ask, how long it takes to search $1500? What is every-ones average return on an 10 hours? Not that, anyone (?) does it for money, I think they do it for the silver.
I regularly search boxes of halves and find silver in 50% of the boxes. However, it is a crapshoot. I once had 13 boxes in a row without any silver.....that's $6,500 or 13,000 coins without a keeper. Just keep at it and it will even out. Also look for DDOs, no FG errors, and proofs....
It's good to know brinks employees. No searching just once a week a huge chunk of silver. Good luck wasting your time searching !
And to have all of your family, up to your 3rd cousins in the business, right? or did you claim 4th cousins? lol
Beware of the coins that come from hell paso.I was getting boxs of halves and found that they short the count in the rolls. The boxs are from the hell paso vault that rolls them for the banks in the southwest.
Finding few if any silver in the rolls doesn't surprise me any. After all, it has been 45 years already.
